Rare
Railroad Crossing
What It Means
A round yellow sign with a black “RR” and an X, posted ahead of a railroad crossing to give drivers advance warning. At the crossing itself, you'll also see the white X-shaped crossbuck sign that reads RAILROAD CROSSING.
How Rare Is It on Road Sign Hunt?
Rare. Worth a detour through the right kind of road.
Spotting Tip
These cluster near rail lines that parallel or cross rural highways and older town centers — small towns that grew up around a rail depot are a good bet.
Fun Fact
The round shape of the advance-warning railroad sign is unique among U.S. road signs — it's the only sign that shape, chosen specifically so it can't be confused with any other warning on the road.
