Only found on long, steep mountain descents — interstates through the Rockies, Appalachians, and other serious grades are where these show up, often with the actual gravel ramp visible just past the sign.

The ramps themselves are usually filled with loose gravel or sand on a steep upward slope, using rolling resistance and gravity together to stop a runaway truck — depending on the grade and the truck's speed, the ramp bed can run anywhere from a few hundred to well over a thousand feet long.
