Speed Limit

Speed Limit road sign

What It Means

A white rectangle with a black border reading SPEED LIMIT above a number. It states the maximum legal speed for that stretch of road under normal conditions.

How Rare Is It on Road Sign Hunt?

Common. You'll spot these on almost any drive.

Spotting Tip

These post at the start of nearly every road, and again after major intersections or where the limit changes — you'll spot dozens on any road trip, especially where highway speeds step down for towns.

Fun Fact

Speed limits are set state by state, and rural interstates can post as high as 85 mph in parts of Texas — the highest posted limit in the country — while some state highways drop to 25 mph in town centers just a few miles away.
